Date: Sun, 3 Dec 1995 08:37:04 -0800 From: jessea@uclink2.berkeley.edu (Jessea NR Greenman) Subject: ALERT: SUBMITTING TESTIMONY; writing reps' hometown papers (fwd) DATE: December 1, 1995 TO: Advocates for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth FROM: Rea Carey, Coordinator, National Advocacy Coalition on Youth and Sexual Orientation RE: Congressional Hearing !!! URGENT ACTION ALERT!!! SUBMITTING WRITTEN TESTIMONY FOR THE CONGRESSIONAL RECORD A Congressional Hearing entitled, "Parents, Schools, and Values" will be held on December 5 and 6 in Washington, DC. The hearing was originally requested by Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition and it is expected to serve as a forum for the extreme right's views on homosexuality, sexuality education, and condom availability. It is NOT expected that any youth or direct youth-service providers will be allowed to testify at the hearing. Therefore, it is critical for written testimony to be submitted to the sub-committee for inclusion in the Congressional Record of the proceedings! Without written testimony, the hearing proceedings will primarily reflect the views of the extreme right. Written testimony can include: - Letters about YOUR family values; - Letters from youth, parents, teachers or other youth advocates; - Statements from organizations serving gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender youth; - Statements from national advocacy organizations; - Research articles, fact sheets, or other data on GLBT youth, sexuality education or condom availability; - "Sign-on" letters from groups of organizations regarding sexuality education or condom availability; - Anything else that reflects the truth of the lives of GLBT youth and/or information on sexuality education in your community, or condom availability. If you are interested in submitting written testimony for the Congressional Record of the hearing, send a cover letter with your materials stating, "I understand that it is parliamentary procedure to accept written testimony up to ten days following a Congressional Hearing. I respectfully request that the enclosed materials be included in the Congressional Record of the hearing entitled, "Parents, Schools and Values" held on December 5 and 6 in Washington, DC." Send your written testimony to: ATTN: Leigh Stadthaus; Economic and Educational Opportunities Committee; Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee; B-346 Rayburn House Office Building; Washington, DC 20515. Also, please send a copy of your testimony to: NACYSO; 1025 Vermont Avenue, NW; Suite 200; Washington, DC 20005. ============================== (fwd) From: Azcandra2@aol.com Date: Fri, 1 Dec 1995 21:20:44 -0500 Subject: To write papers in committee members' home districts re: Sheldon hearings Apparently-To: These are major papers in the districts of the members of Congress who would hold subcommittee hearings on the "gay agenda" in public schools as demanded by far right Rev. Lou Sheldon. Members read their district's papers most days to see what is going on, and even if your town is not in the district they are likely to read what you have to say. These paper listings are courtesy of Bill Stosine BCS41@aol.com; I looked up the towns to find the ones for each Congressional district. Subcommittee Chairman Hoekstra, R-MI Cadillac News,P. O.
