Date: Fri, 22 Sep 1995 07:29:46 -0400 (EDT) From: David Casti Subject: ACTION ALERT: Hearings Rescheduled Submitted by: Mary Ann Murphy Dear Friends, Here is an issue that needs our attention. It was forwarded to us by the Human Rights Campaign Fund. A Congressional Committee has set October 13th as the tentative date for a hearing saught by anti-gay zealot Lou Sheldon. The Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Economic and Educational Opportunities Committee will hold the hearings. In an August fund raising appeal, for his Traditional Values Coalition, Lou Sheldon promised to use the hearings to attack local school efforts to prevent hate violence, AIDS and sucide. Sheldon, in 1989, called for men women and children with AIDS to be confined to "cities of refuge." The hearings into " Parental Involvement in Social Issues in Education" will focus on sex education and abstinence, condom distribution in schools and "homosexual curricula." A one sided list of witnesses is expected to present the wrong position on each of these issues. Here is a sample letter: SAMPLE The Hon. Peter Hoekstra The U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 Dear Representative Hoekstra: I am writing to urge that you cancel the hearings on Parental Involvement in Social Issues and Education.. These hearings are clearly a vehicle for pushing the religious right's agenda of denying lesbians, gays and bisexuals of their inalienable rights, destroying absolutely essential programs to reduce hate crimes against lesbian, gay and bisexual youth and reduce the spread of AIDS. Congress should not interfere with local control of education. Local parents and teachers must be allowed to address the needs of young people threatened by hate violence, AIDS and suicide -- free of federal mandates. Please cancel these hearings. Yours truly, (YOUR NAME) Please do let us know of any calls messages or letters you send. It helps us know if this effort is working. Love, Lambda Letters
