Yesterday we met with officials in the California State Dept. of Ed. regarding inclusion of LGBT information in health education materials. They've "got it" re HIV/AIDS and youth suicide but don't yet have sufficient information in their hands to include us in materials educating young people about drug, alcohol, and tobacco use; nor re dropping out of school, nor re running away from home, nor re ...etc. etc. They don't believe that queer youth form significant parts of those populations and need information addressed to their specific needs re esteem, identity. I realize this is problematic... don't worry, we will emphasize that the youth are having these problems not BECAUSE they are gay but BECAUSE of rampant societal homophobia. SO, this is a CALL for information. You can make a BIG difference in the future of millions of young people. We have access to online searching for the University of California system and will so search, as well as SOME other online databases. What we need from each of you: 1. Any RESEARCH having to do with LGBT young people and drug use, alcohol use, tobacco use, dropping out, running away, getting pregnant/getting people pregnant (young LGBT people sometimes do this to "prove" they are not LGBT), and/or the effect of SILENCE as to LGBT concerns on LGBT young people, particularly re their exhibiting these other negative behaviors as a result of such silence and lack of support. NOTE: We do not need more information on youth suicide. 2. RESEARCH can be academic or not (e.g. done by local agencies via survey; narrative/anecdotal) 3. Please, if you know of any such studies, post as complete citation information as possible AND, if you know of any such studies ONLINE, please indicate the pathway to the site. If the studies are agency reports rather than journal articles, please indicate contact information for obtaining these reports.
