It is the story about the death of Charlie Howard, a gay man in Bangor, Maine. It is the story of Jim Barnes, on of Howard's teenage killers. Jim has spent a significant amount of time working in the community to prevent homophobic based violence, particularly among teens. In fact, he lectures throughout the state. PENITENCE is a story of a teenager who gets swept up in popularity and "fitting in" and ends up being involved in one of the most notorious hate crimes of the 1980's. > >As a gay man, it was difficult for me to read this book. Part of me wants never to forgive Jim Baines and the other two for what they have done. But as the author is a good friend of mine, he sent me a copy to see what I thought. I was surprised that I learned so much from the book. It correctly places blame where blame is do, on society and its blase (sp?) attitude about hate crimes committed against gay and lesbian citizens. I would highly recommend reading this book and consider placing it in your bookstore. > >None of the proceeds of the book benefit Jim Baines, at his request. Instead, proceeds will benefit the Eastern Maine AIDS Network, a scholarship in Charlie Howards name and the PEPP program, initiated by the author. Promote Equality, Prevent Prejudice is a project dear to Ed's heart and he wants to take his message throughout the country. He envisions this project to target pre-teen and teen students, as well as adults and would like to see a chapter in every school in the country. > >A screenplay has been completed and negotiations are under way for either a major motion picture or a made for television movie. In any case, this book is worth reading. > >You can find the book, on-line with the Maine Resource Guide at (http://www.maineguide.com). You can even order on-line if you like. There is even information about the PEPP program and information on how to reach Ed Armstrong, the author. > >Spread the word. This is a story that has to be told, and read! > >Happy reading! *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+ PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CROSS POST WITH ATTRIBUTION Jessea Greenman Co-Founder, Project 21; ph/fax: 510-601-8883 586 62nd St. Oakland, CA 94609-1245 Project 21 is *always* looking for more volunteer organizers.
