The e-salon precedes a face-to-face conference focussing on the important area of sexualities and the role of schooling in shaping individual and community attitudes. The conference run by the Deakin Centre for Education and Change will be broadly concerned with issues of identity and culture, equity and access. The Electronic Salon is a way of involving a wider audience of people with interests in this area from around the world. The Conference, 'Schooling and Sexualities: Teaching for a Positive Sexuality' will be held on the weekend of the 28th and 29th of October in Melbourne. Inquiries about the conference can be made to Angie Bloomer (angieb@deakin.edu.au). The e-salon will run from the 19th to the 27th and it is hoped will provide a broad international forum for debate as well as informing the face-to-face debates of the conference. Here is the terrain in which the e-salon (and the conference) is intended to operate. The formation of sexual identities and community attitudes is of profound importance in the lives of young people in their years at schooling and beyond. However, the way such matters are or are not addressed in the school context is often problematic, for students, educators and community figures. Concerned with practical theory and well theorised practice, the e-salon aims to raise questions, canvass recent research and identify areas for reform. Its emphasis will be on: * opening up the hidden dimensions of sexuality and schooling; * finding ways to talk and work with young people that are both inclusive and generative; and * developing positive strategies and agendas for change. Issues to be addressed: * the sexual construction of schooling * representations of sexuality in the curriculum * gay and lesbian experiences within existing frameworks; issues for students' sense of self, for equity and access * ethnicity and sexuality- assumptions and implications in school and community * disability and sexuality - self esteem, recognition, rights and identity * homophobia - attitudes and consequences in and outside school * going beyond the silences - speaking about violence and abuse * sexuality and technology - schooling and the Internet. To this end there are four papers from the face-to-face conference available via email for discussion during the e-salon.
