Middlebury College is joining the ranks of enlightened employers:

Effective September 1, 1993, Middlebury College will extend the
same benefits to persons who meet the College's definition of a
domestic partner that the college presently provides to spouses
of employees, to the extent permitted by law.

Given the recent VT supreme court decision in the case of the
University of Vermont and the fact that we also have a
nondiscrimination clause covering sexual orientation, this may
have been a foregone conclusion, but the administration was very
open to working on the actual language of the policy with those
few of us who are out here.

The college's definition of domestic partner sets relatively
attainable criteria, and it covers opposite sex partners who are
unmarried as well. It will also extend benefits to natural or
adopted children of a domestic partner of an employee.

Another victory for equity and reason.
