Insurance (medical, dental, etc.) programs were *not* included for various reasons, primarily cost. As of July 1993, same-sex domestic partners of Apple's US employees will have access to expanded benefits. Which benefits has not yet made clear. I hope that it will include all benefits currently offered to legal spouses. Here is the text of the announcement: __________________________________________________________________________ Thursday, January 28, 1993 Apple to Extend Benefits Coverage to Same Sex Domestic Partners I am pleased to announce that Apple has approved the extension of benefits coverage under certain benefit programs to same sex domestic partners of U.S. Apple employees effective July 1, 1993. This step is consistent with Apple's commitment to diversity and meeting the needs of our employees. We have long prided ourselves as a model for social responsibility, and the extension of these benefits sets a leadership example to others in our industry. In reaching this decision, we had to weigh the needs of employees in the context of the overall business. We decided to extend certain benefits to same-sex partners because same sex domestic partners presently do not have the ability to marry legally and become eligible for benefits. More details about the extended coverage will be provided by our Human Resources Benefits Department during the upcoming Open Enrollment in April 1993. We plan to provide the opportunity for Apple employees to sign up their same sex domestic partners during this Open Enrollment period. I am personally delighted by this decision. John Sculley Chairman and CEO __________________________________________________________________________ As you can imagine, we at Apple are very excited about this. Much of the credit for this accomplishment goes to the Apple Lamda's Family Needs Task Force. Apple Lambda is the lesbian and gay employees association at Apple. The Task Force is a group of employees who worked hard for more than a year and a half to convince the administration that expanding benefits to the families of Apple's gay and lesbian employees was the "right" and cost effective thing to do. Thanks also go to the Steering Committee of Apple Lambda who set up a meeting between John Sculley and Apple's lesbian and gay employees. It is from the Task Force, the support of our Human Resources department and the meeting with John that the benefits really came to happen. Regards, ---Daniel---
