I have maintained a chant list for several groups I work with in here in Atlanta. It focuses primarily on Lesbian/Gay/Bi/Transgendered and AIDS issues, but also addresses some other issues dear to us progressives. I place it here for two reasons: (1) That it will be helpful to others, and (2) that others will post or e-mail me chants that I may add to it. I am especially intersted in chants on the following subjects: War, Women/Choice, Unions, Animal Rights; I would also appreciate non-english chants (with translations, if possible). ------------------------ ATLANTA CHANT LIST ------------------------ --- MISCELLANEOUS ------------------------------------------ GENERAL * 1-2-3-4 / We're Tired of This Shit - Let's Go to War! * The Whole World / Is Watching! * Wherever You Go, / Whatever You Do, / Just Be Aware / We're Watching You! * 7-8-9-10 / When's This Damn Thing Gonna End! WHEN POLICE ARE WEARING GLOVES - Because of their (apparently-deliberate) misunderstanding of the mechanisms of AIDS transmission, police officers often wear gloves to protests concerning AIDS and lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgenderal rights. * Take Off Your Gloves! * Your Gloves Don't Match Your Shoes! / You'll See It on the News! You'll See It on the News! is optional. * Use the Latex Where It'll Do Some Good! Replacements for Get Used to It: And We Vote; And We're Not Going Shopping; And We're Not Eating Lunch; And We're Not Going Back; And We're Not (etc.); etc. Notes: The items which follow "and we" or "and we're not" are usually selected (1) to identify the normal process in the establishment being protested or (2) for camp value. * We're Here! MULTIPLE-DRUG-RESISTANT TUBERCULOSIS (MDR TB)/JOHN KAPPERS - In the first Georgia case of Multiple-Drug- Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR TB), the DeKalb County Board of Health decided to place John Kappers under "respiratory isolation" (house arrest) because he had positive cultures - among many negative ones - for the disease. Cultures are not used to determine contagiousness of tuberculosis - rather sputum smears are used, and Kappers had 12 consecutive negative smears. DeKalb County said it preferred to "err on the side of caution." When pressed on its rationale for adopting such a Draconian standard, DeKalb said it had conferred with health officials in other states. When asked which states, DeKalb identified Mississippi (where no MDR TB cases had been reported); DeKalb did not consult with officials in New York or California, where MDR TB has been treated for some time. * Fight the Fear / With the Facts! PRO-CHOICE (Also See Section: Wimmin/Women: Pro-Choice) --- RIGHTS FOR NON-HUMAN ANIMALS---------------------------- VEGETARIANISM * No More Carrion! / Vegetarian! * Don't Have a Cow! / Eat Vegetarian! --- OTHER ISSUES ------------------------------------------- CHANGE THE FLAG - The Georgia state flag was changed in 1956 to protest court rulings demanding desegregation. The left fourth of the flag was left unchanged (the state seal on a field of blue), but the horizontal stripes (red, white, red) comprising the rest were replaced with the Stars and Bars (the Confederate Battle Flag, often erroneously referred to as the Confederate Flag). The Stars and Bars is a symbol of racism in many contexts, including this one. * Burn the Flag / So You Can Change the Flag! Notes: From protests against the Confederate battle flag on the Georgia Flag OLYMPIC STADIUM/SUMMERVILLE - Summerville is the neighborhood that abuts the Atlanta/Fulton County Stadium, the Olympic Stadium, and the parking areas for both. The neighborhood suffered a major depression, from which it has never recovered, after the construction of Atlanta/Fulton County Stadium (which will be torn down after the Olympics). When Atlanta gained the right to host the 1996 Olympics, Summerville residents were promised that they would be part of all planning for any new stadiums in their neighborhood. This didn't happen and plans which they wished to modify were railroaded past them. * The Whole World is Watching / How They Sold Out the Neighborhood! Gradually individuals in the crowd chant "Sold Out" when the rest are saying "Whole World" and "Sold Out", so the chant becomes "Sold Out! (pause, pause) Sold Out! (pause, pause)" and then merges seamlessly into the chant below when names are added in the pauses. Notes: From the protests against the Olympic Stadium. * Sold Out! / Maynard Jackson, / Sold Out! / Andy Young, / Sold Out! / Billy Payne, / Sold Out! / Georgia Tech, / Sold Out! / (etc.) Replacements for italicized names: (any name); etc. Notes: From the protests against the Olympic Stadium.
