BI-SEXUAL SURVEY Dr. Paula Rust, a researcher at Hamilton College, has been working on a Survey of Sexual/Bisexual Identity, Community, and Politics. In spite of a previously announced mid-June deadline, there is STILL TIME TO PARTICIPATE in the survey and to FINISH AND SUBMIT partially completed ones. If you don't have a copy of it yet, act quickly. Here are details (I'm forwarding these for her, but am otherwise unconnected with the project; please contact her rather than me if you have questions--addresses given below): **DEADLINE: This is the last call for people in the USA to return your questionnaires. Plese return them by the END OF JULY (this month). People outside the USA still have a few months to complete and return their questionnaires. **Haven't found time to finish your questionnaire? Is it sitting on your desk or buried in a closet? If you have a copy of the questionnaire but have not found time to finish it, please send me your unfinished questionnaire if you have either: 1) finished all the closed-ended ("multiple choice") questions, OR 2) finished Part I but not Part II. Partially completed questionnaires are not as valuable as fully completed ones, but they are still very valuable and I would love to have yours. If you haven't found time to finish it by now, please don't wait any longer to send it in. **If you know of anyone else who still has a copy of the questionnaire, please pass this information on to that person. **IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE BUT DON'T YET HAVE A QUESTIONNAIRE: There is still time to participate (barely). You are eligible to participate if you: --are bisexual OR have ever thought you might be bisexual; OR --have ever felt attracted to both men and women, at the same or different times in your life; OR --have had sexual relations with both men and women; OR --are questioning your sexuality OR prefer not to label yourself. If you have friends who would also like to participate, tell me HOW MANY COPIES of the questionnaire to send you. The original announce- ment of the research study is appended to the end of this message, in case you want further information about the study or me. Email me at prust@itsmail1.hamilton.edu, or you can call (+1) 315-859-4219 and leave a message. Or, write me at: Paula Rust, Dept. of Sociology, Hamilton College, 198 College Hill Rd., Clinton, NY 13323 USA. I NEED YOUR POSTAL ADDRESS to send the questionnaire; it is NOT ONLINE. It comes with a postage-paid return envelope. **ANONYMITY: Remember that the questionnaire is completely anonymous. A couple people have wondered about the serial numbers on the questionnaires. Rest assured, they do not identify anyone. They are simply a way for me to keep track of how many questionnaires I've sent out. Even if I did keep track of whom I sent each serial number to (which I don't), I wouldn't know who eventually filled out and returned the q'naire. **SUCCESS OF THE STUDY SO FAR: Excellent. Given the length of the questionnaire and the time it takes to complete, I am ecstatic to report that I've received over 650 completed q'naires from at least five different countries. The more I receive, the more informative the study will be, so I'm hoping to receive lots more, but I am very impressed at the effort so many people have contributed. By the way, most people have chosen to do the optional "map question" at the end of the questionnaire, and the variety and creativity is truly amazing. We certainly are diverse! ----The following is the text of the original e-mail announcement ----of the study that circulated several months ago. People who ----have already been in touch with me re the study will not ----learn anything new by reading beyond this point. ANNOUNCEMENT: Research study on international diversity in SEXUAL/BISEXUAL IDENTITY, COMMUNITY, and POLITICS--may be of interest to people of ANY orientation, including transgender/transsexual folks. Women and men are needed to participate in a study of sexual/ bisexual identity and the development of bisexual community and politics. Involves an anonymous questionnaire that includes questions on coming out, your opinions about sexuality and bisexuality, and, if you are bisexual, what it means to be bisexual, diversity in the bi community, your views on the future of bi community and bi politics. You do not have to be involved in a bisexual community or bisexual politics to participate, and you do not have to be bisexual to participate. The study also includes women and men who are coming out, who prefer not to label their sexuality, who are not sure what their orientation is, who used to identify as bisexual but don't any more, who are lesbian/gay and have felt attracted to or had sexual or romantic relationships with members of the other sex at any time in their lives, or who are heterosexual and have felt attracted to or had relationships with members of their own sex at any time in their lives. The questionnaire is available in English and French, but answers may be written in other languages. Transsexuals and transgenderists are also welcome to participate. Thank you!! Paula C.
