THE CONFERENCE: The Campus and Youth Organizing Institute is a one day conference featuring both large-group sessions and small-group workshops addressing a variety of issues relevant to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth on campuses in the New England Area and beyond. TOPICS INCLUDE: The State of the Campus Address; Building Alliances: A Series of Interactive Exercises; Internalized Homophobia: The Ongoing Process of Coming Out; Backlash: An Outgrowth of Visibility. FEATURED SPEAKERS INCLUDE: Kenneth Reeves, Mayor, City of Cambridge; David Leonard, Founder NEQ-Net; Curt Shepard, Director NGLTF Campus Project; David LaFontaine, Chair, Governor's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth; Felice Yeskel, Director UMASS Amherst Program for LGB Concerns; Al Ferreira, Faculty Coordiantor, Project 10 East, Cambridge Rindge and Latin. See directions below. CLOSING RECEPTION: (Sheraton Hotel) The Pride in Scholarship Fund (PISF) is offering a private reception for students and speakers immediately upon conclusion of the conference. The reception will feature artwork from local gay and lesbian students and artists. Refreshments and light hors d'oeuvres will be provided. The student reception will precede the PISF's Annual Scholarship Awards Fundraising Dinner and Cocktail Reception which is being held at the Sheraton Hotel, directly across the street from the Back Bay Hilton. SPONSORS: The NGLTF Campus Project: As a formal project of the NGLTF, the Campus Project seeks to develop a centralized information and resources center and to assist in the development of programs which respond to the needs of lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth on campuses across the nation. New England Queer Network (NEQ-Net): The purpose of NEQ-Net is: to facilitate an exchange of information among gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender student organizations in New England and the larger community, and to provide a forum for furthering the goals of student organizations in New England. The Greater Boston Business Council (GBBC): Founded in 1990, part of the mission of the GBBC is to promote a positive image of the diversity of gay and lesbian citizens; to provide an opportunity and environment for the personal, professional and social growth of the organization's members and to strengthen the position of gays and lesbians in society. The Pride in Scholarship Fund (PISF): The mission of the PISF is to provide scholarships on a non-discriminatory basis to undergraduate students attending accredited colleges and universities in Massachusetts. CONFERENCE GOALS: The goal of the Campus & Youth Organizing Institute is to offer a forum which will stimulate the exchange of ideas and promote the establishment of healthy and vital campus and youth organizations and to create strong communication networks. The NGLTF Campus Project has developed a one-day institute which will highlight local resources and offer discussions addressing recurring issues which affect the empowerment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. Positioned at the beginning of the academic year, we hope that this event will inspire strong intra-campus organization and outreach, cooperative inter-campus networking, and increased visibility of local resources and support groups. GETTING THERE: On the Green Line (B, C or D lines): Hynes Convention Center Stop, exit to Mass Ave and turn left on Boylston then right on Dalton St. Hilton is on the right past the Cheri. Use the "Boodles Restaurant" entrance and go to the conference center on the Second Floor. E Line: Prudential Stop, exit to the Prudential Center and follow Belvedere Street past the Christian Science Center facility to Dalton St. The Hilton is across from the Sheraton. Use the entrance as noted above. Orange Line or Commuter rail: Back Bay Station, exit to Dartmouth St, Cross Dartmouth and enter Copley Place Mall. Walk all the way through the mall, across the skybridge, and straight through the Prudential Center Mall to the Sheraton. Follow hallway to escalator, descend and exit the hotel. Hilton is across the street. Use entrance as noted above. By Car: From I-93: Storrow Drive Exit, take fenway exit off Storrow. Stay in left lane through 4 lights. Go right on Dalton Street at 5th light. From I-90 (Mass Pike): Take exit 22. Take prudential Center fork. Take first right on Belvedere. Hotel on right after 2 Blocks.
