The NIMH AIDS Working Group was established to promote program coordination, and maintains a liaison with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the Office of Minority Health (OMH). A subgroup of this working group focuses on issues related to behavior change research, and includes representatives from the CDC, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and other agencies concerned with behavioral aspects of the HIV epidemic. The AIDS Concept Review Committee is composed of outside experts from a broad range of scientific and policy perspectives. It advises the National Mental Health Advisory Council and the NIMH on research gaps, priorities, and opportunities; on the needs of institutions, organizations, and communities for education or information; and on the appropriate role of the NIMH in relation to the AIDS activities of other Federal agencies. In conjunction with NICHD, it sponsors research on behavioral aspects of AIDS prevention in children and adolescents. ***************FUND INFORMATION*************** FUND ACCESSION NUMBER S 12184-072 FUND TITLE Sexually Transmitted Disease Faculty Expansion Program DESCRIPTION (FUND) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announces the availability of funds for fiscal year (FY) 1996 for a cooperative agreement program to provide resources to support faculty positions specializing in sexually transmitted diseases (STD) to schools of medicine in the United States. The funds may be used to support the salary and benefits of a faculty member, travel to three project-related meetings, and acquire supplies necessary for professional training activities. Not more than $15,000 annually may be used to support relevant research. The recipient supported under the STD Faculty Expansion Program will be expected to establish a faculty member to provide: 1) Preclinical, didactic instruction in the pathogenesis, natural history, epidemiology, and management of STDs sufficient to produce a sound educational basis for subsequent clinical instruction, and 2) clinical instruction in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of STDs. The project is also intended to support the development of linkages between health departments and medical schools in the area of STD prevention. The faculty member will be expected to care for STD patients at one or more clinics supported by the State or local health department, and develop STD research programs, preferably in collaboration with local or state health departments. Recipient institutions must modify medical school curriculum to include a minimum of 4 hours of lectures on clinical and epidemiologic aspects of STDs during the 2nd year and a minimum of 20 hours of lectures and clinical instruction in the 3rd or 4th year. A minimum of 25 hours of lectures and clinical instruction must be provided for all residents in primary care specialities.
