AB This paper complements a one-day satellite meeting convened to address gender issues in general and the impact that HIV/AIDS is having on women in particular. The satellite also examines related policies, research, and programs. The paper provides a framework for considering an agenda for HIV/AIDS prevention; determining effective strategies for improving communication between men and women regarding HIV/AIDS prevention; incorporating men into family- planning-based programs to prevent HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs); motivating men to support economic opportunity for women; and enhancing prevention efforts from the grassroots to the international level. The satellite forum reviews HIV/AIDS in developing regions and the development of gender- sensitive HIV/AIDS prevention mate0rial and dialogue and summarizes the consensus reached at the 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women. The paper also includes the verbatim text from the Platform for Action, the position statement of the AIDS Control and Prevention Project. MJ International health policies. Policy development. Women. AB This annual report focuses on the international incidence and prevalence of tuberculosis (TB). In most developing countries, TB is a widespread epidemic. Careless TB treatment practices are creating TB bacteria that are resistant to once-effective drugs. The threat of multi-drug-resistant TB increases as the numbers of poorly treatment patients increase. As HIV compromises the immune system, it quickens the pace at which TB spreads. This report analyzes common treatment errors and the potential consequences of neglect of TB. The effect that TB is having on women, children, HIV-positive persons, and refugees in developing countries is explored. The report also includes a discussion of TB in the workplace and the threat of airborne TB. Recommendations for reducing transmission, morbidity, and mortality through the implementation of directly observed treatment (DOTS) are set forth. MJ Tuberculosis (TB). Tuberculosis prevention. AB This booklet describes the evolution of the Swiss national HIV/AIDS prevention media campaign from its 1987 inception to the present. The campaign centers around the promotion of condom use and the use and distribution of clean and/or sterile needles and syringes. The campaign encourages low-risk behaviors including sexual monogamy and abstention from intravenous drug use. The booklet contains reprints of advertisements that emphasize condom use for heterosexuals and homosexuals alike, the distribution of clean needles at neighborhood pharmacies, and the importance of treating people with HIV/AIDS fairly and with compassion. The results of a study that evaluated the impact of this prevention campaign are also included. MJ Prevention marketing campaigns. Media. National health policies. Health education needs.
