The participants in this work group consisted of service delivery professionals working with female clients, health services researchers with expertise in HIV and women's health, as well as Federal representatives. Participants discussed issues related to barriers of HIV/AIDS services to women and strategies to reduce or eliminate these barriers. Several participants were people living with HIV disease. Work Group members were asked to help the Bureau to: (1) identify and understand barriers to HIV care funded under the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (C.A.R.E). Act; (2) develop a framework to deal with access issues specific to particular populations, as well as with those that cut across several population; and (3) involve affected populations in defining these issues. The Work Group identifiying the following areas for proposed technical assistance and evaluation studies: * Special needs of drug using/recovering women; * Training providers to serve women; * Migration; * Intra- and Interagency policies and practices; * HIV-related support services for women; * Continuum of care; * Special needs of adolescent women; * Program organization development; and * Meeting the needs of women as women. Individuals from Federal and private sectors with an interest in HIV and women's health attended an afternoon closing session, during which proposed study designs and general recommendations were presented.
