Nationwide Pharmacy Opens Non-Profit HIV Resource Center Fire Island, NY (EGCM) Stadtlanders pharmacy, a nationwide pharmacy specializing in caring for individuals challenged by HIV and AIDS, recently became the first such pharmacy to open a non-profit HIV resource center. The center is at 45 Harbor Walk in the Fire Island Pines, located off the New York coast of Long Island, and will be open throughout the summer to serve the large numbers of people visiting the Pines and Cherry Grove, two popular gay resort communities on Fire Island which have been seriously impacted by the HIV epidemic. Called Stadtlanders By The Bay, the center provides free educational materials and information on where to turn for HIV related services. The center also accepts donations and sells merchandise from not-for-profit AIDS organizations, with all proceeds going directly to AIDS charities nationwide. According to Stadtlanders president Gregg Perelman, "The HIV resource center really puts a face to ideas which have been part of Stadtlanders philosophy from the beginning. Since the days when Stadtlanders was a neighborhood drug store, educating the community and supporting programs that promote public health have been a priority." Some of the literature and programming available through Stadtlanders By The Bay has been donated by Stadtlanders pharmacy and is part of their nationwide public service campaigns, including the free quarterly magazine, LifeTIMES, and the first in a set of free booklets, HN Nutrition Guidelines : Practical Steps for a Healthier Life, published by Stadtlanders with the Physicians Association for AIDS Care. In addition, Stadtlanders By The Bay will provide other services now offered primarily to Stadtlanders patients, such as access to their toll-free medication counseling number and nationwide database. Visitors to the resource center can also consult support groups by phone with the Stadtlanders pharmacy insurance specialists and social workers if the on-site staff cannot answer their individual questions. The Fire Island Pines Resource Center, formerly a gift shop called Melbamar, now brims with dozens of different free pamphlets, newsletters, and videos from nationally ecognized AIDS research and service organizations, plus fabulous t-shirts, jewelry, and other fundraising items provided by various AIDS non-profits. Samples of the personal tributes captured on individual panels from the Names Project AIDS Quilt are on display, as well as more culturally-oriented photos, books, and art contributed by visitors to the center. Stadtlanders By The Bay is open daily from 12 noon to 8:00 P.M.
