Housing

The dormitories of College of the Atlantic (COA) are located in refurbished houses, summer cottages, and one brand new dorm. All are aesthetically pleasing.

Most rooms are double occupancy, with a limited number of single and triple rooms available. Make known your preference and we will try to comply. All buildings have lounges with limited cooking and refrigeration capabilities for late night teas, snacks, etc...

Meals

The food at The College of the Atlantic is simply fantastic and has received national acclaim. Six meals are included with the full meal plans. Sunday's Dinner Extravaganza will be a choice of Lobster, Steak, or a Vegetarian Dish. Please check the appropriate box on the registration form.

The Conference Site:

College of the Atlantic is a fully accredited, coeducational, four-year college located in Bar Harbor, Maine, offering a Bachelor of Arts in human ecology. 250+ students pursue a liberal arts education while studying the various relationships which exist between humans and their natural and social environments. You will recognize the beauty and uniqueness of COA from the moment you step foot onto campus.

Many of the buildings and dormitories were built at the turn of the century as summer cottages. Take a morning stroll through the terraces and rose parterre designed by Beatrix Farrand, one of the great landscape designers of the 20th century. Pass through the terraced Newlin Gardens on your way to a meal or event in Kaelber Hall and Gates Community Center. Meditate along the shore or College Pier looking out over Frenchman Bay towards Schoodic Point, Bar Island, and the Porcupines. See for yourself the campus that Princeton Review's 1996 'Student Access Guide to the Best 309 Colleges' gave top billing in "Beautiful Campus" category. COA's kitchen was rated fourth in the nation under the category "Great Food", fourth in "Most Politically Active", and an impressive sixth in the "Gay Community Accepted" category.

The Region:

Bar Harbor is one of the east coast's most sought after vacation spots. The town voted down the notorious Question #1 by the largest percentage of any town or city in the State of Maine (>74%). MDI (Mount Desert Island) is the third largest island on the eastern US seaboard. It is home of Acadia National Park, which occupies 150 of the 270 square miles of the island. Cadillac Mountain has the distinction of being the first spot in the continental US to be struck by sunlight each and every morning. The island's third largest mountain , Dorr Mtn., is named after a man who happened to be family.

You will have the opportunity to explore Acadia in all its wonder and glory. You may choose to kayak Frenchman Bay, walk the bar to Bar Island (around low tide), visit Sand Beach and hike Great Head, swim and sunbathe at the "clothing optional" ledges of Lakewood, star gaze on Cadillac Mtn., get splashed at Thunder Hole, or walk (5 minutes top) to town and browse or shop. COA, Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and Mount Desert Island have much to offer in helping to make Symposium XXII a memorable event.
